The cycling history of Mattia de Marchi seemed one of those marked by a profound disappointment: that of not being able to find his place in the professional world. The spark that makes lost love rediscover is an endurance race to which they are invited, specifically the Ultracycling Dolomitica, 700 km for 17,000 metres in altitude. Mattia has participated in various gravel events around the world, events such as the Atlas Mountain Race in Morocco and, lastly, The Traka in Spain.

GranGuanche Audax, Ferry gravel race won by De Marchi

Our Mattia De Marchi is getting the hang of it, and with him his Enough 'partner' Asja Paladin. Last 19 March, they loaded their Miss Grape bags - as little as possible - because their goal was to win the GranGuanche Audax, an unusual 700 km self-sufficient gravel race in the Canary Islands. How is it possible to cover 700 km of gravel on islands as small as the Canaries? Well, you just have to be able to take the ferry. During the GranGuanche Audax, the time limit is marked by the departure of the ferry to the next islands, and whoever reaches the last island ride in time proves to be 'Audax'. A classic ultra-cycling race, but in the spirit of Audax. Participants can run in groups and help each other out so that they are never late for the next ferry. Breaks are almost timed and average speeds must be strictly adhered to. If you do everything perfectly, covering 600 km with 14,000 m of altitude difference should take 32h 35min on the bike, with an average speed of 19.3 km/h, plus 5h 25min on the inter-island transfers by ferry. Those who know a little about the world of ultra-cycling gravel know that this is the kind of race that the Enough guys are keen on. And indeed, no fewer than six Enough boys prepared their bikes and set off. Rapid Red Carbon wheels with Pirelli Cinturato M 700x40C tyres, with the lightest possible choice of gears for the Campagnolo Ekar: 38 at the front and 10-44 at the rear. MissGrape Internode bags and a Cluster 7, waterproof and nice and compact. On the front two Buds for the important things, just the essentials for sleeping: no sleeping bag, but bivy and emergency cover. We could use a hundred different phrases to describe the Enough guys' GranGuanche Audax, but we could never convey their passion as well as their words. "To cut a long story short, it was all incredibly intense and beautiful for everyone. We cycled day and night in the most diverse and incredible scenery we have ever seen. And yes, we got some results, which never hurts. Mattia and Manuel were first and second in the individual classification, Fede and Frank were second in the pairs classification and Asja finished second in the women's category. When it comes to Enough and competitions, you know that among the objectives is also the overall ranking, and it is no coincidence that the 2022 edition was won by Mattia De Marchi in front of his partner Manuel Truccolo, and that Asja finished second. You say Enough, you say fun, friendship and relaxation. But between the start and the finish line it is competition and a knife between the teeth.
